Start with the movement

A grab rail is useful only when it is where the hand naturally needs it

Support requirements change around the bathroom. Standing from a toilet may require something very different from maintaining balance in a shower or moving between two parts of the room.

Straight rails provide simple support in a defined direction. Angled, L-shaped and T-shaped rails combine more than one gripping position, while folding support arms project out from the wall to provide support beside a toilet, washbasin or shower seat.

For bathrooms used by several people, movable or removable systems can allow support to be repositioned rather than forcing every user to adapt to one permanently fixed layout.

Position around real movement

The room should determine the rail, not the other way around

Think through the sequence of movement before fixing any support. The useful point for a hand while standing may not be the useful point during a seated transfer.

Beside the toilet Folding arms and fixed rails can support transfers, sitting and standing.

Secure fixing is essential: a grab rail is a load-bearing support product, not a decorative bathroom accessory. Fixing requirements vary by product and wall construction. Always follow the manufacturer's current installation instructions and use suitable structural reinforcement or specialist fixings where required.
