Lever
Push, pull or rotate a conventional lever to control water. Longer levers can reduce the amount of fine grip required.
Consider for: homes, accessible bathrooms and familiar everyday washbasin control.

Start with the interaction
The best tap is the one the user can control comfortably
Tap selection is often treated as a finishing decision, but in an accessible washroom the control method can have a direct impact on whether the basin, bath or wash station is easy to use.
A long lever may work well for someone who finds gripping and twisting difficult. A timed push tap removes the need to turn the control off again. Infrared systems eliminate physical activation altogether, while knee and pedal valves move control away from the hands completely.
Temperature control is a separate question. Some taps incorporate thermostatic protection within the product, while others are designed to work with a separate thermostatic mixing valve.
Four questions before choosing
Specify the control around the user and environment
01
How should water be activated?
Lever, push button, sensor, knee or foot operation.
02
Who controls the temperature?
The user, an integral thermostatic cartridge or a separate TMV.
03
What environment is it for?
Home, public washroom, care setting, healthcare or specialist workspace.
04
What must the complete system satisfy?
Check pressure, mounting, approvals and water-regulation requirements.

Five ways to turn the water on
Different control methods solve different accessibility, hygiene and water-management problems. Start with the physical action required from the user.
Timed push
Press once to start a timed water flow. The tap then closes automatically without the user needing to operate it again.
Consider for: public washrooms, changing rooms and high-use environments.
Infrared
A sensor detects the user's hands and activates water without a conventional handle or push button.
Consider for: touchless operation, reduced hand dexterity and selected hygiene-led washrooms.
Knee operated
A long lever is moved with the knee, keeping both hands free at the wash station.
Consider for: specialist wash stations and users who cannot comfortably operate hand controls.
Foot pedal
Floor- or wall-mounted pedal valves operate the water supply while leaving both hands completely free.
Consider for: clinical, commercial and other specialist hands-free applications.
Accessible does not always mean automatic
A well-designed lever can be an extremely effective adaptation
Where the user wants direct control over flow and temperature, the geometry of the lever can matter more than adding electronic complexity.
Longer operating levers Extended handles can be pushed with the palm, side of the hand or elbow where gripping is difficult.
Single sequential movement Selected taps combine activation and temperature adjustment into one controlled movement.
Thermostatic lever taps Products such as selected Granberg, Inta and AKW mixers can combine accessible operation with thermostatic protection.
Check the reach Basin depth and tap position should allow the intended user to reach the control without leaning excessively.
Temperature control
The tap and the thermostatic protection are not always the same component
Some mixers incorporate thermostatic control within the tap. Other outlets require or are intended to be combined with a separate thermostatic mixing valve positioned within the plumbing system.
Domestic & residential
TMV2-approved products are commonly used where controlled mixed water is required in domestic and residential installations. Match the exact approval and application to the project.
Healthcare & higher-risk use
TMV3 products are intended for applications requiring the higher level of thermostatic performance associated with healthcare and vulnerable-user environments.
Separate mixing valve
Where the tap itself is not thermostatic, a suitable separate mixing valve can blend hot and cold supplies before water reaches the outlet.
Healthcare requires more than easy operation
Water hygiene influences the design of the outlet itself
Specialist healthcare taps address factors that extend beyond general accessibility, including the internal design of the outlet, temperature protection, cleaning and water hygiene.
Self-draining outlet designs Selected products are designed to reduce water remaining within the spout after use.
Removable spouts Available on selected healthcare models to support specialist cleaning and maintenance regimes.
Safe-touch bodies Selected thermostatic models are designed to reduce hot external surface temperatures.
Manual and infrared control Choose long paddle operation or selected sensor-controlled healthcare outlets according to the specification.

What is WRAS compliance?
Water-connected products must be considered as part of the complete water installation. WRAS product approval is a recognised way of demonstrating that a fitting has been assessed against relevant UK water-fitting requirements within the scope of its approval.
Approval and installation are separate questions: a WRAS-approved product still needs to be suitable for the particular installation and fitted in accordance with its approval conditions and manufacturer's instructions.

Before ordering
Six details can change which tap or valve is suitable
Check the complete water system rather than selecting the control on appearance alone. Pressure, temperature strategy, power and mounting can all affect the final choice.
User operation
Establish the user's grip, reach and preferred movement before deciding between lever, push, sensor, knee or foot control.
Water pressure
Check the minimum and maximum dynamic and static pressure requirements for the exact tap or thermostatic valve.
Temperature strategy
Decide whether thermostatic control is integral to the tap or provided separately by a suitable TMV.
Mounting & projection
Check tap holes, deck thickness, wall position, spout projection and the relationship between the outlet and basin.
Power & controls
Infrared products may require battery boxes, transformers or mains provision positioned to suit the particular product.
Approvals & application
Confirm the WRAS, TMV or healthcare approvals required for the project and check the exact scope of the selected product.
Check the complete specification: WRAS approval, TMV classification, healthcare suitability, operating pressure, power supply and installation requirements are product-specific. Always confirm the current technical documentation for the exact tap, spout or valve before installation.
