The door changes how the shower is used
Accessibility and water containment pull the enclosure in different directions
A conventional full-height shower enclosure provides privacy and strong separation between the wet and dry parts of the bathroom, but its height and door arrangement may make assisted showering less convenient.
Half-height doors take the opposite approach. They retain a physical barrier at lower level while leaving the upper part of the shower open, allowing somebody outside the wet area to assist a seated user more easily.
Split-level glass doors sit between the two. The upper and lower sections can be operated independently, so the enclosure can function like a conventional full-height shower when closed and become more open when assistance is required.
Start with four questions
Decide how open the shower needs to become
Will another person provide assistance? Half-height and split-level systems can allow a carer to reach into the shower without fully entering the wet area.
How important is privacy? Full-height glass creates greater enclosure, while open half-height arrangements provide less visual separation.
How much clear opening is required? Bi-folding, pivoting and multi-panel doors create very different movement envelopes and access widths.
What is beneath the enclosure? Confirm whether the door is being installed to a shower tray, tiled floor or coved vinyl wet-room floor.
Three enclosure philosophies
Full height, split level or half height?
These are not simply different styles of the same product. Each changes how somebody enters the shower, how assistance can be provided and how enclosed the showering space feels.
01
Conventional enclosure
Full-height glass
A complete glass enclosure for independent showering where privacy, contemporary styling and water containment are major priorities. Bi-folding and pivoting options can still provide generous level-access openings.

02
Two modes in one
Split-level glass
AWS Liberation divides the door horizontally. Keep both sections closed for a full-height enclosure or open the upper section so somebody outside the shower can provide assistance.

03
Assisted showering
Half-height screens
AKW half-height PET enclosures create a lower splash barrier while leaving the upper showering area open. A weighted shower curtain completes the enclosure above.

Shop full, split-level and half-height shower doors
Choose premium made-to-measure AWS glass, conventional full-height bi-folding and pivoting enclosures, or AKW half-height PET systems in white or Silverdale finishes.
Think beyond the appearance of the screen. The key differences are how much of the shower can open, how assistance is provided and how enclosed the space remains during normal use.

Upper enclosure
Fully enclosed by glass.
Upper section can open independently.
Open, normally complemented by a shower curtain.
Assisted showering
Carer normally works through the main doorway or within the enclosure.
Upper section can open while the lower barrier remains closed.
Carer can reach over the screen while remaining outside the main wet area.
Privacy
Highest of the three approaches.
Similar to full height when both sections are closed.
More open; curtain and room layout become important.
Typical material
Toughened safety glass.
6mm toughened safety glass in the AWS Liberation range.
High-impact translucent PET in the current AKW ranges.
Design character
Conventional contemporary shower enclosure.
Premium accessible glass system with adaptable operation.
Practical care-led enclosure with lightweight framed panels.
Good starting point when...
Independent showering, privacy and glass aesthetics dominate.
The bathroom needs to work for both independent and assisted use.
Regular assisted showering and easy carer access dominate.
The opening mechanism changes the room
Think about where every door panel goes when it opens
Door width alone does not tell you how accessible an enclosure will be. Bi-folding, pivoting, multi-folding and split-level systems all use the surrounding space differently.
←→
Bi-fold
Panels fold together as the doorway opens, reducing the distance a conventional single door projects into the bathroom.
180°
Pivot
A larger door panel rotates around its pivot point. Check the complete sweep against basins, toilets, grab rails and circulation.
360°
Inward / outward folding
Many AKW folding configurations can move in more than one direction, giving greater flexibility when opening the shower for assistance.
2
Split-level
Upper and lower sections operate independently, allowing the enclosure itself to change according to whether assistance is required.
AWS Liberation
Accessibility without the care-enclosure aesthetic
Build the enclosure from individual made-to-measure glass elements
Liberation is the most configurable range in this category, combining fixed panels, full-height doors, bi-folding doors and split-level sections into bespoke accessible enclosures.
6mm toughened safety glass Clear glass is standard across the current range, with optional frosted glazing on selected configurations.
Made to the project dimensions Individual doors and fixed panels are manufactured within defined custom-width ranges rather than only standard enclosure sizes.
Anti-limescale surface treatment Current Liberation glass products use a protective coating intended to make regular cleaning easier.
Accessible handle options Selected full-height doors can be specified with a larger easy-grip handle instead of the standard knob.
The enclosure can change between independent and assisted use
Liberation split-level doors are 1900mm high overall, divided into an 800mm lower section and an 1100mm upper section. Each section can be operated independently.
01Close both sections for a conventional full-height shower enclosure.
02Open the upper section when somebody outside the shower needs better access to the user.
03 Keep the lower section in position to retain a physical barrier around the lower shower area.
AKW half-height enclosures
The same practical system in two different finishes
The current AKW ranges use lightweight aluminium frames, translucent high-impact PET glazing and made-to-measure door configurations for assisted showering. The primary choice at this level is between white and Silverdale frame finishes.
White
Practical and familiar
Powder-coated white aluminium frames create a traditional accessible-showering appearance and coordinate easily with white sanitaryware and care equipment.
Heights: 750mm or 900mm depending on product.
Glazing: translucent high-impact PET.
Configurations: single, bi-folding, multi-folding and fixed-panel combinations across the range.
Curtain: compatible continuous curtain-rail and weighted-curtain arrangements supplied with current systems.
Silverdale
A more contemporary finish
Silverdale frames retain the practical benefits of the AKW PET system while giving the enclosure a more metallic, contemporary appearance.
Heights: 750mm or 900mm depending on product.
Glazing: 2.3mm translucent high-impact PET across the current made-to-measure range.
Movement: many configurations use bi-folding or multi-folding doors with flexible hinge arrangements.
Finish: coordinated Silverdale frames, handles and curtain-rail components.
Material changes the character of the enclosure
Toughened glass or PET?
Both appear in accessible showering, but they solve different design priorities. Compare aesthetics, weight, privacy and how the enclosure will be used rather than treating one as universally superior.
Toughened safety glass
Premium transparency and architectural detail
Used across AWS Liberation and Roman full-height products, toughened glass produces the more conventional high-end shower enclosure aesthetic.
Visual character: clear, minimal and design-led.
Privacy: selected AWS products can be ordered with frosted glazing.
Maintenance: protective glass treatments are available on the current AWS and Roman ranges.
Weight: heavier than PET and therefore part of a more substantial door and hardware system.
High-impact PET
Lightweight, translucent and care-focused
AKW uses PET within its half-height enclosures to create lightweight panels suited to frequent assisted use and multi-panel door configurations.
Visual character: translucent rather than completely clear.
Impact resistance: designed around robust everyday accessible-showering use.
Weight: lightweight compared with an equivalent glass panel.
Application: particularly well suited to half-height assisted-showering doors.
The door is only one part of water control
Good drainage matters more than simply making the screen taller
Particularly in a level-access wet room, the enclosure works together with shower direction, floor falls and drainage. A half-height screen should not be expected to compensate for a poorly planned wet-room floor.
01
Control the spray direction Position the shower head so water is directed into the intended drainage zone.
02
Use the enclosure as a barrier Doors, seals, deflectors and curtains reduce water moving beyond the showering area.
03
Create effective falls to waste The finished floor needs to guide escaped water towards the drain rather than the rest of the room.
04
Specify sufficient drainage Match the drainage system to the expected shower flow and finished floor construction.
Measure before ordering
Six things to establish before specifying the enclosure
Many products in this category are custom-made. Confirm the finished surfaces, opening movement and installation type before submitting dimensions.
01
Finished opening
Measure between finished tile faces or the final proposed closed positions of the doors—not unfinished structural surfaces.
02
Tray or wet-room floor
Confirm whether the enclosure sits on a shower tray, square-edge tiled floor or coved vinyl finish and choose a compatible product.
03
Handing
Left- and right-hand configurations matter across many AWS and AKW products. Check the room from the correct viewing position.
04
Door movement
Check the complete opening path against toilets, basins, shower seats, support rails and wheelchair circulation.
05
Floor falls & drainage
Confirm where water will travel when doors are open and ensure the floor directs it back towards the waste.
06
Shower type
Check any manufacturer restrictions relating to shower flow, pressure and spray. Current AKW PET enclosure instructions do not approve the use of power showers.
Made-to-measure means the dimensions matter: several AWS Liberation and AKW enclosures are manufactured to the dimensions supplied and may be non-returnable once made. Confirm the exact measurement method, required handing, installation surface and manufacturer's fitting instructions before ordering.
