Why a shallow sink matters
The space beneath the sink is part of the design
A conventional deep kitchen sink occupies a large volume beneath the worktop. For somebody approaching from a wheelchair, that can reduce knee clearance and force the user to sit further away from the bowl.
Granberg Ergosteel reduces the bowl depth to 120mm. The shallower form leaves more usable space below while also reducing the distance somebody has to reach down into the sink during everyday washing, rinsing and food preparation.
Combine that geometry with an open knee space or a height-adjustable worktop and the sink becomes part of an accessible working area rather than an obstacle beneath it.

Seven models from compact single bowl to full double-bowl drainer
The model number identifies the sink layout. Choose around the available worktop space and the way the sink will actually be used rather than simply selecting the largest bowl that will physically fit.
Larger single bowl
A simple one-bowl configuration with more overall sink space while retaining the same 120mm bowl depth.
Single bowl + drainer
Adds an integrated drying surface to a shallow single bowl and can be orientated with the drainer on either side.
Compact 1½ bowl
Combines a main shallow bowl with a smaller secondary bowl without adding an external drainer.
1½ bowl + drainer
A versatile layout combining a main bowl, secondary bowl and integrated draining surface. This is the Ergosteel model displayed in Kitchen One.
Double bowl
Two shallow bowls provide separate working areas without requiring an integrated external draining surface.
Double bowl + integrated drainer
The largest Ergosteel configuration combines two 120mm-deep bowls with an integrated draining surface. The unit is reversible, allowing the wider layout to be adapted to the orientation of the kitchen.

Bowl depth affects both sides of the worktop. Above it, a shallower sink reduces how far the user needs to reach down. Below it, the bowl occupies less of the space where a seated user's knees and legs may need to go.
That relationship becomes particularly important when the sink is fitted into a rise-and-fall worktop. Lowering a worktop with a conventional deep sink can bring the underside of the bowl uncomfortably close to the user's legs.

Accessible kitchen guidance
Shallow depth is not just about comfort
In England, Approved Document M Volume 1 gives specific guidance for kitchens in M4(3) wheelchair-accessible dwellings. It states that the sink should be no more than 150mm deep.
The same guidance also calls for insulation to the underside to help protect a wheelchair user's legs from scalding. Ergosteel uses a 120mm bowl and includes a heat-insulation pad beneath the sink.

Building Regulations depend on the building,
jurisdiction and project requirements. The sink
is one element within the wider accessible kitchen
specification and should be considered alongside
worktop height, clear leg space, controls,
appliances and circulation.

Inset or under-mounted
Ergosteel can be integrated into the worktop in two different ways, allowing the same accessible bowl geometry to work with different kitchen styles and worktop specifications.

The details beneath the sink matter too
A shallow bowl only creates useful space if the waste, insulation and plumbing are considered with it. Ergosteel is supplied around that complete accessible sink arrangement.
Heat-insulated underside
A factory-fitted heat-protection pad helps reduce the risk from contact with a hot sink surface where the user's legs occupy the space below.
Low-profile waste
The waste arrangement is designed to occupy less space beneath the sink than a conventional deep trap arrangement.
Flexible waste hose
Flexible drainage is particularly useful where the sink is installed within an electrically or manually height-adjustable worktop.
Basket strainer & overflow
The sink package includes the appropriate waste components and overflow parts for the bowl configuration selected.
