Grates
Grids and grates form the visible top layer of a wetroom drainage system and should be selected to suit both the required performance and the surrounding floor finish.
Suitable grid designs for different floor finishes:
- Vinyl floors – clamp-style systems designed to secure the vinyl flooring around the waste outlet
- Tiled floors – tile insert grates or framed grates designed to coordinate with the surrounding tiles
- Microcement and resin floors – seamless-edge or minimalist grates for a clean, contemporary finish
For environments where safety, security and durability are particularly important, lockable grid options are available for both vinyl and tiled wetroom systems. These help prevent unauthorised removal and are especially suitable for public, commercial and high-use installations, including schools, hospitals and care environments.
Grate design can also affect drainage performance. The size, spacing and arrangement of the slots influence how quickly water enters the waste system and how efficiently the wetroom floor drains.
In accessible wetrooms, grids should be:
- Flush with the surrounding floor surface
- Slip-resistant
- Easy to remove or access for cleaning where appropriate
- Easy to clean and maintain

What grid is best for a vinyl wet room?
A clamp-style grid system is normally required for a vinyl wet room floor because it securely grips and seals the flooring around the waste outlet.
Can you change a grate without replacing the waste?
In some systems, the grate can be replaced separately from the waste body. Compatibility depends on the manufacturer, model and dimensions of the existing drainage system.
Can tile insert grates be used with a vinyl Wet room floor?
No. Tile insert grates are designed for tiled floors and are not suitable for securing vinyl flooring. A compatible vinyl clamp system should be used instead.
Are grates interchangeable?
Not always. Grates must match the dimensions, fitting method and drainage system of the waste body. Always check product compatibility before ordering a replacement.
